Best Anti Aging Night Cream for 50s

We may not be getting any younger, but that doesn’t mean we have to look our age!

When you reach your 50s, you’ll have started going gray, your skin will be duller, your skin will be producing less collagen, making it less firm and you’ll have started to have a lot more fine lines and wrinkles.  You may also be worried that deeper lines and wrinkles are on their way.

Signs of aging are usually first seen in the eye area.  And while crows feet can be quite endearing, this is not so for the other signs of aging around the eye: fine lines, creases, wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, bags under the eyes, puffiness.  Even those of us who have done our best to look after our skin start to have these signs by the time we get to our 50s.

A good anti aging night cream may not be able to turn back the clock completely, but it can certainly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Some anti aging creams help with the delicate eye area too, just what you need! And some can help brighten your skin tone and even help with dark age spots too.

We have studied the best anti aging night creams on the market for this age group, and have identified which are the Top 5 products.  We follow this up with a little buying guide, which should help you become more fully informed before reaching your decision on which one to buy.

Best Anti Aging Night Cream for 50s - Reviews

Strictly speaking this is a targeted serum rather than a night time moisturizing cream, but it’s so good we simply had to make it our number one.

As we talked about earlier, ageing around the eyes is one of the first signs of aging and becomes more prominent in our 50s.  This product tackles the problem right at the source.

It really tackles those unsightly bags under your eyes, handling both puffiness and dark circles, renewing your sagging skin, and giving you a gentle eye lift.  It firms and plumps the delicate eye area.

But that’s not all.  It goes beyond that and takes the process one step further.  It removes those really fine lines, cracks and wrinkles underneath the eye.

It feels great to put on - of all the eye serums on the market we think this one’s got the lightest texture.  It absorbs really quickly and naturally into the skin.

As it’s a serum, that means you apply it after your toner and before your moisturizer.  That said, it does have a moisturizing effect of it’s own, combating the dry skin under the eye, leaving it hydrated and nourished.

You can put it on at either time of day, morning or night.  It’s neat little dispenser ensures you won’t use too much at any one time, so you get your money’s worth out of the bottle.

It’s packed with skin loving ingredients, including Vitamin E, aloe vera, rosehip oil, lavender, jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid, shea butter and white tea.

So, it’s completely organic, and not a synthetic cream but a natural one, supporting the natural health of your face and skin and as such is paraben free.

We love how it’s not tested on animals, and is 100% cruelty free.

Pros

  • Good for bags under the eyes
  • Good for dark circles under the eyes

  • Firms and plumps, removing fine lines

  • Value for money

  • packed with natural, skin loving ingredients

  • Feels lovely

  • not tested on animals

Cons

  • Not hypoallergenic

There’s a reason this night cream has “miracle” in the title!

Not only does it reduce the appearance of wrinkles (including crows feet!) but it also works against dull skin tone and hyperpigmentation too!

It’s star ingredient is retinol, and it holds a good percentage of it too.  OK 2.5% doesn’t sound like a lot, but compared with other creams and moisturizers it is, with many dermatologists recommending that you start using a lower percentage before working your way up.  You only need a percentage of 0.25% retinol, for it to have a real effect on your skin. It’s a highly powerful ingredient that used to be available by prescription only.

Retinoids such as retinol reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. This is exactly what you need when you’re in your 50s, as your skin starts producing less collagen when you hit the menopause.  With retinol your skin becomes firmer and improves its elasticity.

Retinol also stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color, fades sun damage, pigmentation, improves skin tone and leaves you with more radiant skin.

It’s fully loaded with other skin loving ingredients too like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E,  green tea, aloe vera, jojoba oil, and shea butter. All of which deeply hydrate the skin, keeping it moisturized for hours on end.  And that’s before their other multi-action power!

The cream quickly absorbs without a heavy or sticky feel, or oily residue.

There are no nasty chemicals like alcohol, sulfates, PABAs, or parabens.

It’s non-comedogenic and won’t clog your pores, and even people with sensitive skin can use it, it’s so gentle.

Pros

  • Reduces appearance of wrinkles, even crows feet
  • Works against dull skin tone and hyper pigmentation

  • Uses 2.5% retinol to boost collagen production

  • Skin becomes firmer and more supple

  • Fully loaded with skin loving ingredients

  • Feels nice

  • No nasty chemicals, suitable for sensitive skin

  • Non-comedogenic and won’t clog your pores

Cons

  • It doesn’t contain any SPF, so best to use only as a night cream, or if you did want to use it in the day, apply a sunscreen afterwards

Neutrogena are another good brand that you can trust, recommended by dermatologists, with products in 70 plus countries.  And this product really shows them in a good light.

We love this night cream - it even helps with deep, stubborn wrinkles like crows feet!  In fact the anti-aging effects are so powerful that the hydration and moisturization effects are just a side bonus.

This is combined with some other really powerful skin loving ingredients too, including hyaluronic acid and glucose complex.  The hyaluronic acid hydrates, replenishes and rejuvenates your skin. The glucose meanwhile, in addition to acting as a humectant like hyaluronic acid, also has skin conditioning properties.

And if that wasn’t enough, it even brightens and evens skin tone too - and diminishes age spots!

It’s lightweight and silky, a real dream to put on!

Olay is another great, well known brand you can rely on to deliver.  And anti aging skin care products are their specialty.

We love this night cream from Olay!  The special formula manages to penetrate 10 layers deep, well beyond the skin surface, to not only provide intense moisturization, but also to regenerate the skin cells on the surface while you sleep, visibly correcting the appearance of even deeply inset wrinkles.  All the while improving skin texture and elasticity.

It feels great to put on too!  You just smooth it over your face evenly at the end of your night time skin care routine, and massage into both your face and your neck.  There’s no greasiness, no chemical scent, just a nice, velvety feel and it absorbs straight in.

It’s key skin loving ingredients include amino-peptides, olive oil extract, and vitamins B and E.  All of them do their bit to visibly correct the look of aging skin, aiding surface cell regeneration throughout the night, plumping the skin to maximum effect.

You’ll feel the difference after just two weeks, and some women have reported noticing a difference after just one night.

It feels great to put on and rub in, lightweight and not greasy at all.  It doesn’t leave a sticky film like some creams do, and it doesn’t clog your pores.  Simply put on at the end of your skin care routine.

Pros

  • Intense moisturization through the night
  • Improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to collagen peptides

  • Lightweight, non greasy

  • dermatologist tested

Cons

  • It doesn’t have SPF sun protection, so if you wanted to use it in the day as well as the night, you’d have to wear sunscreen too

Best Anti Aging Night Cream for 50s - Buyers Guide

Why you particularly need to look after your skin when you’re in your 50s

OK, so you already have some wrinkles.  And you’ve had them since your thirties (if not your twenties).  But now things are different and you need to kick shake your skincare routine up a gear.  In your 50s your fine lines and wrinkles are more dramatic and this is all because the menopause has left you with a significant drop in collagen and elastin.  So before everything goes from bad to worse, why not do what you can to stop it, or at least slow it in its tracks. Ensure you employ a full skincare routine, ideally morning and night, and use serums to target problem areas/problems.

Why you should apply a night cream, and how

Your skin loses more moisture overnight than at any other time.  Furthermore, modern science has found that skin cells are at their most productive when we sleep, repairing from the previous day’s stressors, recovering and recharging.  And therefore your skin is particularly receptive to the nourishment from the active ingredients in skincare products at night.

A good night cream is effectively a powerful skin moisturizer.  And in addition to having a lovely soothing effect on your face, even a standard night cream can help give your skin an even complexion, and boost collagen in your skin to prevent your skin from sagging.

We strongly recommend that you apply a night cream in the late evening before bed, after cleansing, toning and using a serum.

Common skincare ingredients in anti aging night creams and serums

Hyaluronic acid

The primary function of a night cream, before any anti-aging properties it may have, is to moisturize and hydrate the skin.  That’s where ingredients like hyaluronic acid come in.

Hyaluronic acid deeply hydrates, keeping the face moisturized at just the right level, which means that your skin no longer needs to produce excessive oil to keep it hydrated.  So even if you have oily or greasy skin, moisturizers with hyaluronic acid will work well for you.

The Number 1, 2 and 3 products in our Top 5 all contain hyaluronic acid.

Retinoids such as Retinol

Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, and the most commonly known of them is Retinol.  Retinol is a super popular anti aging skincare ingredient, often heralded as a “miracle” ingredient.

What retinoids such as retinol do, is to boost the production of collagen in the skin.  Collagen, in case you missed it earlier is what makes your skin firm and elastic, and is one of the first things to drop when you hit the menopause.  So anything that increases your collagen production is a must when you’re in your 50s. Once collagen production is up, the skin around fine lines is plumper so their appearance is reduced.

It used to be the case that many retinoids used to be available by prescription only, but now that is no longer the case.  For this reason, you should note that many dermatologists recommend that you start using a low percentage of retinol in your creams before working your way up.  But don’t worry, you only need a percentage of 0.25% retinol in your creams, for it to start having dramatic effects on your skin. If in any doubt, our recommendation is to do a patch test behind your ear, and check for any negative reaction.

Our Number 2 and our Number 3  in our Top 5 products both contain retinoids.

Collagen peptides

For some women in their 50s, collagen production has basically fallen off a cliff edge.  If you have tried retinol based skin care products and not seen much in the way of results, you could opt for a product that has collagen peptides.  Such a product would work to replace the collagen in your skin rather than prompt it to be produced. If this is the route you want to go down, we would recommend our Number 5, which is Collagen Face Moisturizer by L’Oreal Paris.
