Fillers
Dermal fillers are substances injected at varying depths within the skin and soft tissues to fill facial imperfections such as wrinkles, creases and concave scars, as well as to enhance the fullness, or volume and shape of facial tissue.
Dermal fillers are generally classified in two main categories:
Temporary dermal fillers include two categories: collagen and hyaluronic acid fillers. Collagen is a naturally occurring connective tissue component that provides strength and structure to the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance between the skin cells that binds moisture and provides fullness. Both collagen and hyaluronic acid injectable dermal fillers are created in a lab to mimic these natural substances.
Semi-permanent and permanent dermal fillers are those used to correct deeper facial creases and in larger volume restoration. These fillers generally include microsphere particles suspended into a liquid or gel formulation or compounds that do not readily absorb, injected deep within the soft tissue for more long-lasting and large volume correction.
Hyaluronic Acid was first discovered in the 1930’s and many different medical and aesthetic uses were developed for it in the decades that followed. But this naturally occurring sugar within the body, which is identical in all species, changed the face in the U.S. injectables scene in 2003 when it was given approval by the FDA. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. The two main hyaluronic acid fillers available in the U. S. are Restylane and Juvederm. The indications for either product are similar.
Restylane®, Perlane and Juvéderm®
Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic filler that is immune to these drawbacks given its unique chemical composition. In December 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Restylane for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Additional applications of Restylane include:
- Lip augmentation and/or enhancement
- Reducing the appearance of lines around the mouth
- Modifying nasolabial folds (under the nose) and eye trough deformities
- Facial contouring of the cheeks and mouth
Just like Restylane, Perlane adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).
Like Restylane, Perlane is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that is specifically formulated to add volume like your body’s own hyaluronic acid.
What makes Perlane different is the average size of the particles and the depth of injection. On average, the gel particles in Perlane are larger than those inRestylane, which makes Perlane a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin.
In three clinical studies of 150 patients each, on average 70% of patients maintained improvement for six months after just one Perlane treatment.
Juvéderm® is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid. Juvéderm® injectable gel replaces the hyaluronic acid your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds. A breakthrough in hyaluronic acid fillers Juvéderm® injectable gel is the first smooth-consistency hyaluronic acid gel that is FDA Approved to last up to one year.
Juvéderm® and Restylane® provide a smooth, natural look and feel—so everyone will notice (but no one will know)! In fact, studies show superior results of Juvéderm® compared to a collagen-based dermal filler. Almost 90% of all study volunteers who were treated with both Juvéderm® injectable gel and another dermal filler preferred Juvéderm®!
Juvéderm® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color. In the United States, Juvéderm® injectable gel is indicated for corrections of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (such as nasolabial folds.) Juvéderm® Ultra is dispensed in a 0.8cc syringe. And Juvéderm Ultra Plus is used to treat patients with more severe lines.
