The Link Between Dairy Consumption and Acne

We all know that it’s not just the topical creams and treatments we apply to our skin that help keep it clear, it’s the food we put in our mouths. The link between diet and acne has been a long and complicated battle, but finally new research is showing that there are very clear connections between the foods we fuel our body with and the unfortunate blemishes that spot our faces because of it.

Milk and dairy products have been targeted due to all the hormones that are added. According to Mark Hyman, MD there “is no such thing as hormone-free milk.” In Dr. Jessica Wu’s book, “Feed Your Face” she explains that milk contains a hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (or IGF-1). This hormone stimulates insulin, which then increases androgens such as testosterone in the body. These androgen hormones stimulate oil production, increasing the amount of surface oil on the skin and making breakouts more likely. Studies have shown a relationship between acne and partly skimmed milk, instant breakfast drinks, sherbet, cottage cheese and cream cheese because they contain hormones. Dr. Mark Hyman also points out that over the past few decades, our sugar and dairy consumption has increased, and so has the number of people who suffer from acne.

The conflict lies in that dairy is an excellent source of dietary calcium, so if a person is not getting calcium from any other source in his/her diet, dairy should not be completely cut out. Taking calcium supplements is another option for those who want to cut out dairy completely. However, always remember that eating a balanced diet with a variety of foods is essential for keeping your skin young and healthy.
